Review: ASDA have a good volume of mince pies to choose from this year and these sloe gin ones catch the eye. Fancy purple box does the job, but what are they like?

Review: Any fans of the bourbon-based Old Fashioned cocktail? I hope so, because Co-op have plonked all those flavours into a mince pie.

Review: I’ve liked these in past years, I’m a fan of apple turnovers so these appeal to me. Puff pastry is lovely and the sugar on top usually helps.

Review: The best fancy mince pie of 2019? Certainly up there with the finest. It’s rich and sweet with lovely biscuity pastry.

Review: Another Co-op pie…how many do they have? This one is middle of the road – certainly not very luxury.

Review: They may have dropped the ball with the salted caramel mince pie (4/10), but this sloe gin mince ‘tart’ is amazing.
It’s not really a mince pie, you can tell that by the name, but if you want something a bit different for Christmas – this could be the one.
There’s a hint of sweet mincemeat in there, a light hint of sloe gin – and the rest is great too – the pastry is soft and the glaze on top is sweet. A sprinkle of almonds on top finishes things off.
Really impressive Aldi. Some of my favourite this year for sure.

Review: This probably sounded like a good idea in a product development meeting. It’s not. They’re neither a mince pie, nor salted caramel. It’s a horrible mix of the two that I would urge you to avoid. It’s easy to get carried away on the salted caramel bandwagon…Aldi need to get off. The pastry is terribly pale too…insult to injury.

Review: Tesco have a large range of pies out for 2018 and this lattice topped number caught my eye the other day. As you can see from the picture, the lattice top isn’t as structurally sound as a normal top – so it does crumble a bit more than you’d expect. However the pastry is tasty and not too claggy with a hint of sweetness. The mincemeat is probably not as firm as I’d like which makes the whole thing a little bit tricky to eat. Having said that the flavours from the mincemeat are all good – sultanas, currants and raisins in numbers too. This is a very enjoyable mince pie – but the overall structure and the mincemeat let it down a little. All in all it’s worth the money and will go down well at Christmas I’m sure!
